Major Depressive Disorder: relief that doesn’t take months to find

The standard path for depression is trial and error: try a medication, wait four to six weeks to know if it’s working, adjust the dose, try another. Brain Centers’ AMPA One Day Protocol uses FDA-cleared neuromodulation to treat depression directly, without medication, on a condensed schedule.

The problem with the standard path

✕

Antidepressants typically take four to six weeks to show whether they’re working, and many people cycle through several before finding relief, if they do.

✕

Side effects, weight changes, sexual side effects, emotional blunting, are a common reason people stop treatment altogether.

✕

Traditional TMS for depression is FDA-cleared and effective, but typically requires daily sessions over about six weeks.

How Brain Centers approaches depression & MDD

  • ✓FDA-cleared TMS targeting the mood-regulating circuits implicated in depression and Major Depressive Disorder.

  • ✓No mind-altering drugs, no sedation. You’re awake and comfortable throughout.
  • ✓Private relaxation suites, not a clinical waiting room.

Who this is for

Understanding the condition

What Major Depressive Disorder actually looks like

Depression is more than sadness. Clinically, Major Depressive Disorder means a persistently low or empty mood, or a loss of interest and pleasure in things you used to enjoy, lasting most of the day, nearly every day, for two weeks or longer. It often shows up alongside:

  • ✓Changes in sleep (too little or too much) and appetite or weight
  • ✓Fatigue or low energy, even after rest
  • ✓Difficulty concentrating, thinking clearly, or making decisions
  • ✓Feelings of worthlessness, excessive guilt, or being a burden
  • ✓In more severe cases, thoughts of death or self-harm

How it works

Why TMS targets this specific circuit

Depression is strongly linked to underactivity in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, a region involved in mood regulation, and its connections to deeper structures like the amygdala and subgenual cingulate.

Precise targeting

Camera-guided TMS locates and holds the coil on the left prefrontal target throughout every session, the same region targeted by FDA-cleared TMS systems for depression.

Repeated stimulation

Magnetic pulses, similar in strength to an MRI, generate small electrical currents that repeatedly activate this circuit, believed to help strengthen and normalize its activity over a course of treatment.

Condensed schedule

Accelerated theta-burst protocols deliver that same therapeutic dose in tightly spaced sessions across one carefully managed day, instead of six weeks of daily visits. See the research behind it →

What to know

Safety and side effects

Most people tolerate TMS well. The most common side effects are mild scalp discomfort, headache, or lightheadedness during or shortly after a session, they typically ease quickly and lessen over the course of treatment. Serious side effects, including seizure, are rare when standard safety screening is followed. There’s no sedation and no recovery time, most people drive themselves home and resume normal activity the same day.

TMS isn’t right for everyone

TMS is not appropriate for patients with certain metal or electronic implants in or near the head (aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, deep brain stimulators, non-MRI-safe devices) or a personal or family history of seizures. Our telehealth screening is designed to catch this before any in-person visit.

Depression FAQ

Common questions about TMS for depression

That’s a decision for you and your prescribing provider. Some patients use TMS alongside medication, others pursue it after medication hasn’t given full relief. Our clinical team reviews your history during the telehealth consultation and coordinates around your existing care.

Not at all, that’s actually one of the more common reasons people look into TMS. Our device is FDA-cleared specifically for adults with Major Depressive Disorder who haven’t gotten satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant treatment in their current episode.

This varies by person. Some people notice changes during the treatment window itself; for others it takes some additional weeks to see the full effect as the brain continues to respond after stimulation ends. Your clinical team will discuss realistic expectations and follow-up during your consultation.

No. The published studies on our Research & Resources page describe the science behind the technology and protocol type generally, not results measured at our facility specifically. Individual results vary and aren’t guaranteed.
