Anxiety Treatment in San Diego

FDA-Cleared Technology · No Mind-Altering Drugs · One Day

When anxiety medication isn’t the answer, there’s another path

Anti-anxiety medications can dull more than the anxiety, motivation, sharpness, and sense of self often go with it. Brain Centers offers a non-medication approach using accelerated neuromodulation, built on FDA-cleared TMS technology. Our device is FDA-cleared for Major Depressive Disorder in adults; for anxiety, our clinical team applies the same underlying technology as evidence-informed, individually assessed care.

Understanding the condition

What anxiety can look like

Anxiety disorders go well beyond everyday stress. They involve persistent, excessive worry or fear that’s hard to control and interferes with daily life, often alongside physical symptoms. Common signs include:

  • ✓Persistent worry that feels excessive or hard to control, often about several areas of life
  • ✓Restlessness, muscle tension, or feeling constantly on edge
  • ✓Racing heart, shortness of breath, or other physical symptoms tied to worry or panic
  • ✓Sleep disturbances, fatigue, or difficulty concentrating

FDA clearance, plainly stated

TMS has FDA clearance specifically for Major Depressive Disorder with comorbid anxiety symptoms, on certain devices, not generalized anxiety disorder on its own. Our device, the AMPA One System, is FDA-cleared for Major Depressive Disorder. For anxiety, our clinical team applies the underlying technology as evidence-informed, individually assessed care.

How it works

The circuitry involved in anxiety

Anxiety is associated with an overactive amygdala, the brain’s threat-detection center, paired with reduced regulatory input from the prefrontal cortex that would normally help calm that response.

Targeted stimulation

Magnetic pulses are directed at prefrontal regulatory circuits, aiming to help strengthen the brain’s ability to modulate its own threat response.

Medication-free option

For people who haven’t found relief from SSRIs or therapy alone, or who don’t want the sedation and dulling some anti-anxiety medications bring, TMS offers an alternative or complement to discuss with your provider.

Condensed schedule

Accelerated protocols compress a full course of stimulation into a tightly managed day rather than weeks of daily visits.

What to know

Safety and side effects

Most people tolerate TMS well. The most common side effects are mild scalp discomfort, headache, or lightheadedness during or shortly after a session, they typically ease quickly. Serious side effects, including seizure, are rare when standard safety screening is followed. There’s no sedation and no recovery time.

TMS isn’t right for everyone

TMS is not appropriate for patients with certain metal or electronic implants in or near the head (aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, deep brain stimulators, non-MRI-safe devices) or a personal or family history of seizures. Our telehealth screening is designed to catch this before any in-person visit.

Anxiety FAQ

Common questions about TMS for anxiety

TMS has FDA clearance specifically for Major Depressive Disorder with comorbid anxiety, on certain devices, not for generalized anxiety disorder alone. Our device is FDA-cleared for Major Depressive Disorder; for anxiety, we apply the underlying technology as evidence-informed, individually assessed care. Our clinical team will walk through this distinction with you during your consultation.

Not necessarily, that’s a decision for you and your prescribing provider. Many people use TMS alongside existing medication or therapy rather than instead of it.

Many people we see have overlapping symptoms. Your clinical team reviews your full history during the telehealth consultation and builds a protocol around your specific presentation.
